First, their burgers are fresh — never frozen. That alone makes it one of the best fast-food chains around.

They’re known and loved for their delicious Frostys, which have been on the menu since day one (and sadly, no longer cost $0.35). Wendy’s sells about 300 million of these per year.

And did you know their burgers are square-shaped because Dave Thomas, the founder, “doesn’t cut corners”?

If you’re a resident of Canada preparing to DoorDash some Wendy’s to your house or office, check out our detailed Wendy’s history first. We answer some of your most intriguing questions in this guide to the burger giants.

Let’s get started!

A Brief History of Wendy’s: Then and Now

The very first Wendy’s Old-Fashioned Hamburger Restaurant was opened in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio, in the U.S.

So, what is Wendy’s named after?

Wendy’s was named after Dave Thomas’ daughter, Melinda. At a young age, Melinda struggled with saying her name, pronouncing it like ‘Wenda’ instead. For the debut of his restaurant, Dave changed ‘Wenda’ to ‘Wendy,’ and there you have it!

The first location to open up in Canada happened not long after, on September 23, 1975. Wendy’s first branch was in Hamilton, Canada.

Later, Wendy’s participated in a merger that helps their profits soar even more.

Many Canadians are familiar with the baked goods franchise Tim Hortons.

This chain has over 1,900 locations, most of which are located within Canada. To propel sales at Wendy’s when they took a little dip, they formed a merger with Tim Hortons in December of 1995 and began selling their baked goods and coffee.

So, what did all this effort, time, and fast-food lead to?

It led to Wendy’s becoming the third-largest burger fast-food chain in the world. It’s currently got over 6,500 locations and gives jobs to an astounding 57,000+ employees. The chain itself is valued at more than $9.45 billion.

So, head on over to your local Wendy’s and see what their world-famous burgers and Frostys taste like!

The Founder Is an Innovator

Wendy’s was one of the first fast-food chains to put the ‘fast’ in ‘fast-food.’

Before them, all service was counter service. Someone parks their car, goes in, and leaves with a bag (or sits down to eat). This was convenient for the time, but Dave Thomas had an idea.

Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas

He opened a second location in Columbus, Ohio. This one, however, had a drive-thru — something that had yet to exist in the fast-food world. He even added a second grill to Wendy’s, allowing for employees to serve drive-thru guests even quicker.

This revolutionary advance in Wendy’s put them on the map in more ways than one — as did their inclusion of the first-ever salad bar.

In 1979, Thomas wanted to attempt a ‘menu diversification’ program, and that included adding a salad bar. It was the first of its kind to do so.

It was popular enough with consumers that by 1992, the restaurant served salads on their to-go menu, too. They still make those salads today! And in most cases, the salad bar has phased out of the restaurants.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption

Dave Thomas did more than just serve up classic, square-cut burgers.

He was an innovator in other ways, too.

Being adopted himself at just six weeks old — and struggling with the way that felt growing up — he wanted to do something that took the stigma out of adoption.

In 1992, he opened the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, which works closely with Wendy’s as well to bring children to a home. They support the work of foster care adoption and provide resources and guidelines for those looking to adopt.

Wendy’s has even become an ‘adoption-friendly workplace,’ which provides paid time off, bonding leave, and additional financial assistance for each adopted child of the employee.

What’s with the Poutine?

You can’t have a Wendy’s in Canada without serving up some poutine!

Poutine consists of french fries, cheese curds, and gravy, and this delicious recipe was invented right here in Canada. The most widespread claim for its inception comes from a dairy town in Québec.

The story goes that a man wanted fries and cheese curds — typically sold as two separate items — and he was in a hurry, so he told the maker to throw them in the same bag. The restaurant owner looked in the bag afterward and called it a ‘poutine,’ slang for ‘mess.’

But it’s a mess with all know and love.

In fact, this side has become so ‘ubiquitous in its home province’ that most fast-food restaurants (like McDonald’s, Burger King, and of course, Wendy’s) sell it as a side item. Neary every Wendy’s in Canada now serves up this glorious mess to-go.

(And pro tip: you can upgrade your side to poutine for a small upcharge.)

Old fashioned hamburgers!

Hi! I'm Felix - I hope you found the post above helpful. I created Cost Finder Canada because I noticed many websites only provided USA or UK prices, and nothing for Canadians. So I spent a bit of time researching and put this site together. If you have any questions about the prices - let me know in the comments below.
