There are currently more than 27,000 fast food joints across Canada but this hasn’t always been the case! Long before the McDonald’s menu reeled in its first Canadian customers, Harvey’s Canada was the place to go.

Nowadays there are over 250 Harvey’s restaurants and the franchise employs more than 6,000 people across Canada. But how did a single fast-food diner grow to be a national sensation?

Well, you’re in the right place to find out! Read on to find out everything you need to know about Harvey’s history.

The Humble Origins of Harvey’s Canada

Harveys Menu Prices
Harvey’s founders, George B. Sukornyk (left) and Rick Mauran

It was Richard Mauran, a man from Montreal, who co-founded the first-ever Harvey’s in Ontario back in 1959. Mauran wanted to create a restaurant that delivered fast service and good food that its customers would enjoy.

He also wanted to make the place feel welcome and homely, hence the simple name ‘Harvey’s’. But did you know that Harvey’s was nearly called Humphries?

Mauran collected ideas for his restaurant wherever he went. The idea for ‘Harvey’s’ was inspired by another successful chain at the time: Henry’s Hamburgers.

But the inspiration for fast-food, made-to-order dining came from a little further afield. In fact, it came all the way from Buffalo in the United States. Mauran had visited a similar restaurant on his trip there and like it so much that he was determined to bring the concept home!

The original Harvey’s sign was even bought second-hand from an old car dealership that was closing down.

Bright Ideas

The first Harveys opened on April 1 in 1959 and locals only expected it to last the season. To their surprise, it thrived through its first year!

Thanks to this success, the franchise bought land in thirty-nine different locations across Canada. They even opened a special branch back in Buffalo, USA!

While Mauran might have drawn inspiration from all over, Harvey’s restaurants were no knock-off. They introduced three amazing new concepts that fast-food chains use across the world now! In this way, Harvey’s revolutionized the driving-in-taking-out dining industry.

The first of the concepts related to financial safety, which could be why Harvey’s managed to survive its first year. It might not sound groundbreaking now, but Harvey’s was one of the first restaurants to cut down on cash theft by following one simple rule. Staff had to put the cash they got in the register immediately.

Customers paid upfront and the money went straight in the till. This allowed a much tighter reign when monitoring cash going in and out of the tills.

The other two ideas are to do with the way in which Harvey’s made amazing strides in revolutionizing the fast-food menu for its customers.

Harvey’s was the first restaurant to use freshly cut potatoes to make oversized, skin-on chips. Before this, most fast-food franchises relied on pre-cut and frozen fries.

And last, but by no means least, we have Harvey’s crowning glory – the customizable Harvey burgers. Harvey’s introduced a unique way of ordering back in 1959.

This involved the customer moving along the service counter following their receipt. This meant that the customer could tell the server exactly what they wanted in their burger without room for error. This is an option you won’t even find nowadays on the Burger King or KFC menus!

An Expanding Enterprise

With a firm foundation, Harvey’s went from strength to strength.

In the 1970s, the franchise ran eighty restaurants. It also joined the big leagues when it merged with a company called Industrial Growth Limited. Together they formed Foodcorp, a company now known as Recipe Unlimited.

Since then, the number of restaurants, customers and staff in the Harvey’s family has grown and grown.

In 1998 they introduced ‘Custom Combos’ to their menu, allowing customers more choice than ever. Some restaurants even serve a unique Harvey’s creation: Frings. These delicious bites are half-French fry and half-onion ring.

And this is just a small taste of Harvey’s ever-evolving menu.

An Evolving Menu

While some classics stand the test of time, Harvey’s isn’t willing to sit back and relax when it comes to amazing food.

They first introduced the Harvey’s flagship burger back in 1989 but have changed this over the last thirty years to meet popular demand. First up was the Superburger – a 1⁄3 pound beef burger, which flew the flag until 1996.

Then came the Ultraburger, followed by the jazzily named Big Harv. This burger is still going strong on the menu today!

It features two patties made with 100% Canadian beef, cheddar and Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. All of this is lovingly drizzled in Harv Sauce and nestled within a gently toasted poppy and sesame seed bun. Feeling hungry yet?

Next up came the Angus burger in 2007 featuring – you guessed it – succulent Canadian Angus beef. This made way for the Great Canadian in 2010 but we didn’t have to say farewell to Angus beef for long. In 2013, Harvey’s combined these two amazing burgers to create the Great Canadian Angus burger.

This masterpiece has got to be one of Canada’s best burgers and paved the way for 2014’s updated Angus burger. The Angus burger still holds the title of Harvey’s flagship burger. And like all their burgers you can customize yours with a variety of toppings including bacon.

If that doesn’t get your mouth watering, we don’t know what will!

Variety is the Spice of Life

Harvey’s Burgers Canada isn’t just about reeling you in with juicy steaks and dripping buns though. They also work very hard to provide all their customers with options so that anyone can eat at Harvey’s.

In 2012, Harvey’s released a special menu in line with the Canadian Health Check. This offers customers several healthy options to enjoy.

These include a vegetarian burger, a grilled chicken sandwich or salad and the Lil’ Original. The restaurant also added Dole Strawberry and Kiwi to its juice fountains.

As a restaurant, Harvey’s is committed to offering and providing genuinely healthy options to its customers. It will not use any ingredients in this menu that don’t meet Health Check standards. This includes any condiments, dressings or toppings.

As a result, you can rest assured that anything you pick from the approved menu is the real deal.

Top-Quality Ingredients and Ethics

Regardless of which menu you choose from, Harvey’s food offers its customers the best ingredients around. It guarantees high-quality Canadian produce throughout its food.

This includes cooking with meat that has been reared without the use of steroids or antibiotics. This also means that Harvey’s produce supports independent farming families across Canada.

All their chicken comes from farms that focus on being environmentally and socially sustainable. By helping to support these farms it encourages more farmers to invest in these methods.

Harvey’s also dedicates time and money to new sustainability initiatives. This includes only using ingredients from sustainable farms. In fact, they’re so committed to this that they’ve teamed up with the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef.

They also use recyclable materials in as much of their package as possible. This includes:

  • Ditching the plastic straws in favor of paper ones
  • Using 100% recycled and recyclable containers for their fries, Fring, and onion rings
  • Using 100% recycled and recyclable paper for their take-out bags
  • Focusing on ways to make other packaging – such as burger wrappers and cups – recyclable

This means you can enjoy your food guilt-free, knowing you’ve bought from Canada’s best!
