1. Domino’s $900 Beginnings

Most people recognize Tom Monaghan as the founder of Domino’s Pizza. This is only half the story.

Tom and his brother, James, bought a pizzeria in the 1960s and later renamed it Domino’s Pizza.

We’ll tackle more about James and the early beginnings down below.

To secure ownership, the brothers paid an initial down payment of $500 and a total of $900 for the pizzeria. Rumors have it that the original pizzeria owner sold the establishment for a low price because it was already on a decline. The Monaghan brothers, however, believed they could revitalize it.

When adjusted for inflation, that amounts to about $7,690.

That’s not a lot when you consider it’s a multi-million international business today. When Tom Monaghan later sold the company and retired, he did so for $1 billion.

2. Domino’s First Canadian Branch

Domino’s Pizza was primarily a U.S. franchise.

The company decided it was time to open their doors to an international market and start opening branches outside the U.S.

To achieve this, Domino’s Pizza opened its first international branch in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1983. It did so with the help of Mike Schlater, who later ascended to the position of Chief Executive Officer for Domino’s Pizza in Canada. The company also opened the first branch in Australia within the same year.

Since then, Domino’s managed to open branches in every province. There are now over 500 branches in the country.

3. The 30-Minute Promise

For many years, Domino’s Pizza took pride in a simple promise: they’d deliver pizza in 30 minutes.

If they failed to meet this promise, the customer would get the pizza for free.

In the U.S., they discontinued this practice by 1993, but they still implement it in other places around the world.

How did Monaghan come up with this promise?

It started with gaining more territory. Tom Monaghan managed to open branches in nearly every corner of the city. This ensured there was always a nearby branch in case someone wanted to order.

Monaghan also refined the pizza-making process down to a science. He worked on shaving off as many seconds and minutes as possible. In many ways, this is similar to the procedure Ray Kroc utilized with McDonald’s preparation and prices.

4. 50% Shares for a VW Beetle

James Monaghan, who bought the first pizzeria along with Tom, didn’t intend to stick with the pizza business for long.

He had a full-time job as a postman and after 8 months working with Tom, he decided it was time to go back to his job.

However, he owned 50% of the company. To properly quit, he sold his shares to Tom but not necessarily for money. Instead of cash, James gave up his ownership of the business exchange for the 1959 VW Beetle that the brothers used to deliver pizza.

During this period, their pizza business still ran in the red. This meant they weren’t earning yet to justify their investment. For James, going back to his postal career might’ve seemed like the more reasonable and profitable choice.

5. Early Online Presence

Not many companies had websites in the 1990s.

Those that did only launched one as a gimmick or to check it off their to-do list. Many websites in the 1990s did not look as dashing or as intuitive as the ones today.

Despite that, Domino’s Pizza was an early adapter. They launched their website as far back as 1996. However, the option to get on the site for online ordering didn’t become a thing until 2007.

This was the same time they rolled out mobile ordering, too.

Online ordering opens up convenience and speed for customers. One of the biggest hurdles of traditional phone ordering is that there not might be enough employees to answer calls. Hundreds of customers might be calling, but the business can’t cater to them all simultaneously.

Online ordering eliminates this issue.

6. More Than Pizza

It happened almost overnight when they launched their line of oven-baked sandwiches back in 2008. Their prices and service rival even that of big sandwich giants like Subway.

The company introduced a new solution to get around this problem: delivery hotspots.

These are locations set around a town, such as malls, parks, and stadiums. Domino’s Pizza can deliver directly to these locations instead of a customer’s home. This makes delivery easier and faster.

Hotspots aren’t available everywhere but they’re great innovations in cities where they’re active.

8. Mobile-Friendly Ordering

With the following years that passed, Domino’s refined the apps to help them keep up with technological demands. The apps are now quicker and more intuitive to use than ever.

9. DomiNick’s Pizza

Mentioned at the beginning of this list is the fact Tom and James Monaghan didn’t originally own the pizzeria that became Domino’s.

It was once a declining pizzeria called DomiNick’s Pizza, owned by Dominick DiVarti.

They kept the name for a few years. After James Monaghan sold his share of the company to his brother Tom, the latter managed to open two more branches in Michigan. He wanted to expand further but the previous owner, Dominick, didn’t want significant changes if Monaghan kept the original name.

The story goes that one of their delivery drivers, Jim Kennedy, came up with the idea to change the establishment name from DomiNick’s to Domino’s. Everybody liked the idea and they officially used Domino’s Pizza in 1965.

Making the change freed Monaghan and gave him full control over the business.

10. Not Afraid to Start Over

Any business that’s been around for decades has its ups and downs.

People can say the same for Domino’s. It hasn’t always been a sunny and successful path to success.

There were multiple cases of Domino’s going under fire and financial trouble. During its first few years, the company was still in debt and this was why James Monaghan went back to his postal job. He didn’t want to split the hours between two jobs if the other one didn’t pay.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Tom Monaghan had to come out of retirement and manage the business again due to declining revenue. It was during the 1990s that he made big changes, firing several key figureheads and replacing them with innovative people to take charge.

Domino’s removed the 30-minute promise in the 90s and started over with a “customer satisfaction guarantee” instead. They also got more flexible with the menu while still maintaining Tom’s philosophy of prioritizing simplicity and flavor.
