Nothing beats sipping on a frosty glass of root beer on a scorching day. And Roy Allen knew that, too.

Wait, who?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you. Here are some interesting facts you didn’t know about North America’s beloved A&W and Canada’s first fast-food restaurant.

A&W Has Been Serving Us for A Century

The first A&W restaurant in Canada.

Before you Google when A&W was founded, listen up. In 1919, Roy Allen (the “A” in A&W) hawked mugs of his homemade recipe to thirsty veterans in California. He realized his root beer was a hit and teamed up with Frank Wright (the “W”) to open up drink-stops all over California before heading east.

Long story short: Frank Wright left after five years but his name stayed. Allen then nurtured his A&W business and added food options to the root beer stands.

In case you missed it, the A&W meaning is Roy Allen and Frank Wright’s named combined. And currently, there are 850 A&W restaurants in Canada, second only to McDonald’s 1,400.

First to Open a Drive-Thru in California

Roy Allen set up the first drive-thru for A&W in 1921, a mere two years after his root beer stand.

Allen’s second restaurant in Sacramento also had the first “tray-boys” who delivered burgers and root beer to guests who enjoyed the food from the comfort of their cars.

Each Family Member Had Their Own Signature Burger

The A&W root beer restaurant had a line of burgers dedicated to each member of the family. Hence, the Papa Burger!

There was also the Mama, Teen, and Baby Burger too. Each had unique toppings and sauces named for the burger like the Papa Sauce, and they varied in size.

In the 1960s, the Burger Family grew into a marketing tactic and A&W erected statues of all four family members holding their burgers and A&W frosty mug.

A&W Invented the Bacon Cheeseburger

Sounds like a bold claim but in 1963, a Michigan franchise owner called Dale Mulder noticed customers asking for strips of bacon inside their cheeseburger and added it to the menu.

Before you argue, realize that not only did several journalists visit to verify the claim in the ‘60s but A&W launched an ad boasting about this in 2014, and no one came forward to argue.

A&W also uses this day to collect donations especially for the Wounded Warrior Project to thank veterans for their service.  It’s important to remember that the first A&W root beer was served during a homecoming parade for World War One vets which shows A&W is patriotic and finds ways to give back to their community.

A&W Hold the Record for the Largest Root Beer Float

In 1999, a Californian franchise owner secured a place in the Guinness World Record for the biggest vat of ice cream soda. In gushed 2,562.5 gallons of root beer mixed with 400 gallons of ice cream for the world’s biggest root beer float.

A&W is the First Franchised Restaurant Chain

By 1921, A&W realized that franchises meant restaurants are run by owners passionate about their eatery. Realizing this makes A&W the first franchised restaurant company and even had more franchise joints than McDonald’s in their peak (the ‘70s).

A&W Root Beer Got Bottled in 1971

Originally, A&W made their beloved root beer in their restaurants but as the ‘60s drew to a close, the company wanted to improve distributions.

In 1971, the first cans and bottles of A&W Root Beer appeared on store shelves. Other favorites, like A&W Cream Soda, weren’t on shelves until the late 1980s.

Also, glass bottles and can keep root beer freshest with a “best by” date of 39 weeks after production. The other diet sodas and soft drinks in plastic bottles only have a shelf-life of 13 weeks.

The Restaurant Used to Have an Awful Awful Burger

And no, it had nothing to do with its flavor.

The Awful Awful burger was mammoth, stacked with two burger patties, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and pickles. It sounds normal but because most A&W burgers only had one patty, this was an awful lot to squeeze in.

You could get it in the ‘60s for $1.10 (which would, thanks to inflation, be around $8.85 today).

A&W Had the World’s First Float-Thru

A&W first opened its doors to hungry Canadians in 1956 and had many similarities to American restaurants: the same root beer and menu.

The main difference was A&W’s marketing tactics. In America, A&W’s tagline was “All American Foods” which wouldn’t make sense to their Northern neighbors.

Instead, Canadian A&W focused on hormone-free meat products and gave birth to the world’s first Float-Thru in 2015. Here, swimmers on the Okanagan River got a surprise when the A&W doled out free burgers as part of their commercial.

Let’s all go to A&W…

Mmm, Now for an A&W Restaurant Root Beer

A&W restaurant has a colorful history and it’s incredible they’ve managed to serve juicy burgers and signature root beer throughout the Great Depression and World War Two.

Fast-forward to 2019, and A&W are still going strong. And as hungry customers, we all wonder: where will they go next?
