Whenever you walk by a Subway restaurant, surely you may have random thoughts about the chain, such as how much Subway menu items cost. Since we already answered that, let’s drop some more knowledge.

So here are nine interesting Subway facts that’ll blow your mind!

When Did Subway First Open?

First Subway Restaurant Subway Menu Prices
Humble beginnings… the first Subway restaurant!

You may think Subway is a relatively new chain restaurant, but you’d be wrong. It was first created back in 1965, which means it’s over 55 years old now!

This means that depending on your age, Subway may have served up sub sandwiches to multiple generations in your family. Not many chain restaurants can boast of that, for sure!

Who Is Subway’s Founder

Many entrepreneurs are young, but you may not have expected Subway’s creator to be that young.

Back in August 1965, founder Fred DeLuca has aspirations to go to college but didn’t have the money to do so. Thankfully, he had a family friend (Peter Buck) who was willing to loan him $1,000 to open a restaurant in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Fred De Luca, Subway’s founder.

Initially, the takeout restaurant was called “Pete’s Super Submarines” because they specialized in making sub sandwiches. Then, in 1966, the two of them created another company called Doctor’s Associates (the “doctor” was Pete since he had a Ph.D. in physics).

Later that year, they opened a second restaurant, and in 1968, they changed the name to the iconic one we know today: Subway.

When Opened The First Subway Franchise?

Although the second Subway restaurant opened in 1968 and they opened 16 others later on, this chain didn’t officially become franchised until 1974.

Their popularity exploded so much that by 1982, they were able to claim that they were the largest sub chain in the entire US. And in 2002, it was the largest American fast-food chain.

For Canada, we got our first location in St. John’s, Newfoundland back in 1986. And in 2013, we reached our 3,000th franchise! This location can be found at the Toronto Pearson International Airport and is open 24 hours a day.

By the 2010s, there were over 40,000 Subway restaurants all over the world. All of them were owned by franchisees.

How Many Subs Does Subway Sell Per Day?

With so many locations in the world, maybe it’s not a huge surprise that over half a grand of subs are served to customers every 60 seconds.

Now let’s expand that to an hour: that number would increase to 320,000! Can you imagine that? It’s enough to encompass the earth 14 times!

Couple that with the fact that there are 37 million different sandwich combinations possible at Subway, no wonder people keep coming back for more.

How Many Different Subway Restaurants Are There?

Remember how we said there were over 40,000 Subway restaurants in the entire world? You may have envisioned them to look all the same. You probably pictured them all in a retail shopping mall, located in a space between other businesses.

But the fact is, they have 9,000 non-traditional locations! For example, you’ll find them in laundromats, casinos, and zoos. And yes, you can even find a Subway in a church!

How Long Is A Subway Footlong?

Sorry to disappoint you, but Subway’s Footlong sandwiches aren’t actually a foot long.

They got away with it for years, but eventually, people caught on to the fact that these subs were 11 inches long, not 12.

When asked about it, Subway said the name “Footlong” was simply a descriptor, not an accurate representation of how long their sandwiches really were.

In the end, it’s just an inch, so it shouldn’t matter too much. You’re still getting a delicious sub, after all.

The Real Meaning of the Subway BMT Sandwich

Are you a fan of the BMT sandwich? Then you probably know it as the “Biggest, Meatiest, Tastiest” sandwich. It comes with pepperoni, ham, and salami, which does make it pretty irresistible.

However, this isn’t what its real name means. Subway’s BMT sandwich is actually named after the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit (BMT) system, which keeps in line with the “subway” theme.

How a Subway BMT is made…

Why Do All Subways Smell The Same?

If you’re a seasoned traveller, then you may have walked past different Subway restaurants around the world. Before you even reached them, you may have thought: I swear I smell Subway!

Well, you’ll be glad to know that no, it’s not just in your head. All Subway franchises do smell the same!

This is because they use the same standard bread. It arrives at the stores frozen, so they have to defrost them before they can bake the bread. What you’re smelling is the process of the bread thawing out.

Although they all smell the same uniformly, Subway’s bread smells distinctly different from other sandwich shops’. However, what gives it this unique flavour will probably remain a secret until the end of time.

Special Cuts For Your Sub

Usually, when you walk into a Subway, they ask you what kind of bread you want, and if you want it toasted.

But did you know you can get your subs specially cut?

When you tell them what type of bread you want, you can ask them to give it an “old cut.” This means instead of slicing it through the middle with a knife, your sandwich maker digs into it.

The signature Subway ‘Old Cut’…

Another “secret menu” thing is the “wing effect.” When you ask for this, the sub maker will hang parts of the meat outside of your sandwich, which gives it, well, a wing effect!

Show Off Your Subway Facts

The next time you and your friends grab a meal together, you can show off your Subway facts if you end up going to this chain. Your friends might think you’re pretty geeky or that it’s cool you know such things. Either way, you’ll get a chance to show you know your stuff!
